The Kosha System
Over the next 12 months we will take a journey through the Koshas and Kleshas. This month will be an intro into the Koshas.
In yoga philosophy, the Koshas are described as the five layers of being that represent different aspects of ourselves, from the physical body to the deepest spiritual essence. The word “Kosha” translates to “sheath” or “layer,” and together, these layers create a roadmap for self-awareness and transformation.
Understanding the Koshas helps us explore our inner world, peeling back each layer to uncover the true self.
- Annamaya Kosha (Physical Body)
This is the outermost layer, often referred to as the food body. It represents our physical body, made up of muscles, bones, and tissues, and sustained by the food we eat. Through yoga asana (postures) and mindful movement, we care for and strengthen this layer. - Pranamaya Kosha (Energy Body)
Beneath the physical body lies the energy body, which governs the flow of prana, or life force. It’s closely linked to the breath and the subtle energy pathways (nadis). Practices like pranayama (breathwork) and energy-based meditations nurture this layer. - Manomaya Kosha (Mental Body)
This layer represents the mind and emotions. It governs thoughts, feelings, and sensory perceptions. Cultivating mindfulness and practicing meditation helps us quiet the mental chatter and bring clarity to this layer. - Vijnanamaya Kosha (Wisdom Body)
The intuitive or wisdom body is where insight, discernment, and inner guidance reside. This layer connects us to a deeper sense of purpose and truth. Practices like self-inquiry, journaling, and meditation help us access this inner wisdom. - Anandamaya Kosha (Bliss Body)
At the core of our being is the bliss body, a state of pure joy and contentment that transcends the mind and emotions. It is often described as our true essence. Deep meditation and moments of stillness allow us to experience this layer.
The journey through the Koshas is not about discarding any layers but rather embracing and integrating them to live a more balanced, harmonious, and authentic life.
